Introduction
Nicknamed Rocket City, Huntsville is best known for its space centre, but there's much more to this charming city, nestled in the hills of northern Alabama. From its buzzing arts community to the sweeping vistas and open spaces of the Monte Sano State Park, there's plenty to see and do.
Situated in the Tennessee Valley, Huntsville is perfectly located for day-trips into the mountains. Hiking Round Top Mountain or strolling through the Japanese garden in Monte Sano are highlights, and there's even an 18-hole golf course with picturesque views. Back in town, the Huntsville Botanical Garden and the lakefront Big Spring National Park are ideal picnic spots.
Of course, science enthusiasts head to Huntsville to visit the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, the visitor centre for NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. As the largest spaceflight museum in the world, it's full of fascinating exhibits, including Explorer I, the prototype of the first ever US satellite, and a space shuttle, tank, and two solid rocket boosters – making up a "full stack".
And, when you've finished exploring the great outdoors, and beyond, a wander round town reveals a range of architectural styles, including many charming antebellum properties. Combined with great Southern food and boutique shopping, it's a lovely way to spend your day.
