Introduction
More than 100 lighthouses and many historic military fortifications from the American Revolution and Civil War line Michigan's shoreline, while offshore numerous maritime museums, ten shipwreck-diving preserves and the only national marine sanctuary in the Great Lakes are ripe for enjoyment.
More than half of Michigan is covered in forest, with plenty of campgrounds, wildlife refuges and state parks scattered throughout creating ample opportunity for recreational pursuits, with miles of hiking and riding trails and rivers for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing.
The capital Detroit accounts for most of Michigan's population and industry, with other notable sights being Ann Arbour, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Lake Michigan Shore and the sparse Upper Peninsula.
