Introduction
As Alabama’s urban-coastal gem, Mobile enchants with its unique mix of historic districts, seaport bustle and plenty of Madri Gras fun.
Indeed, the US version of the annual festival originated in Mobile, and has been celebrated here even longer than in New Orleans – since 1703, in fact. As such, those that visit in February will be treated to two colourful weeks of public parades, performances and fantastical costumes, all tied up in the state’s long-standing traditions of fine food and fabulous music.
But, for those arriving at any other time of the year, there’s still so much to enjoy, from tours of the city’s historic homes and gorgeous gardens to riverboat cruises and museum visits – the Carnival museum is a must. Also, don’t miss the Battleship Memorial Park, home to the USS Alabama, or indeed the Fort of Colonial Mobile. Located on the site of the city’s original 18th-century fort, it’s a true celebration of Mobile’s mix of French, Spanish, British and American heritage.
