Introduction
Angra dos Reis is situated on a scenic bay on the Costa Verde, to the west of Rio de Janeiro. For many, Angra dos Reis is the gateway to the Green Coast, which stretches southwest of here. It's also the gateway to the magnificent islands of Ilha da Gipóia and Ilha Grande, where Brazilian celebrities sail their yachts and sip caipirinhas on the beach.
Angra dos Reis was founded at the beginning of the 16th century and is today an important fishing and shipbuilding port - busier than the rest of the Costa Verde, but hushed in comparison to effervescent Rio. Its attractions include the church and convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, built in 1593 and the town's oldest church, and the church of Nossa Senhora da Lapa da Boa Morte, with its interesting Museum of Sacred Art. Otherwise, it's all about the beautiful islands and the pristine beaches, of which Angra dos Reis has more than its fair share.
