Introduction
Fortaleza is a busy, modern city on the North Eastern Brazil coast, with broad boulevards and al fresco cafes amongst its sparkling tower buildings that overlook the ocean. There are popular urban beaches in the city, with sands suitable for sunbathing and beach volleyball, and a beachside promenade that attracts roller skaters and sunset strollers.
Further up and down the coast from Fortaleza are more secluded sandy spots and pretty fishing villages. Fortaleza itself is known for its excellent nightlife - the sounds of local forró music are often heard drifting out of bars and restaurants in the streets just behind Iracema beach. Another beach, Meireles, features a statue of Iracema, a mythical Tabajara princess who features in a much-loved Brazilian love story.
