Rio de Janeiro is one of the world’s true city greats, where golden beaches and lush green mountains provide a tropical backdrop for samba-fuelled fun and football spectaculars alike. A city of iconic sights and of beachfronts made famous in songs and movies, it’s right at the top of many people’s travel bucket list. And what better way to experience its pulsating rhythms and infection energy than with a visit during that ultimate street party – the Rio Carnival. Flying out from London, you’ll enjoy four nights at the city’s most famous hotel, right on Copacabana Beach, coupled with private transfers and a grandstand ticket to watch the Carnival parade at the city’s Sambadrome.

Rio de Janeiro
With a full day free to explore, you’ll have time to take in some of Rio’s famous attractions. Perhaps begin with a ride up to the summit of Corcovado and the art deco masterpiece of Cristo Redentor – Christ the Redeemer. From its lofty vantage point, 700 metres above sea level, you’ll see the city sprawled out before you, stretching from the golden sands of Ipanema to the forested peaks of the Tijuca National Park and the tumbledown favelas that give the city its unique character. This afternoon, take your pick between the grand Portuguese architecture of the city centre, the winding cobblestones of Santa Theresa and the bars and cafes of Lapa before taking the cable car to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain in time for sunset.

Rio Carnival
Although introduced by Portuguese Roman Catholics in the mid-17th century as a precursor to Lent, the Rio Carnival’s roots lie firmly in the musical traditions of Africa. Today, all-night street parties take place throughout the city while at the Sambadrome – the festival’s centrepiece – a dazzling parade of musicians and dancers, and a place of fierce competition for the city’s street bands and samba schools. You’ll take it all in from your included grandstand seat before perhaps heading out into the city to continue the celebrations.
