The winter in Alberta is a time of fun-filled adventure and snowbound excitement. The once-green landscapes are dazzling white with snow and ice, and evenings are spent gathered around roaring fires in cosy log-cabin hotels. Based in the pretty town of Banff, this holiday makes the best of the colder months with a host of fabulous winter activities; there's everything from snowshoeing trips and guided ice walks to thrilling husky safaris, lazing sleigh rides and ice skating on frozen lakes. We've also left plenty of free time for those who want to hit the slopes.
Day by day itinerary
Day
1
UK/ Banff
Enjoy included airport lounge access before your day flight to Calgary, gateway to the Canadian Rockies. On arrival, you'll take the express transfer to Banff, a picture-postcard town wrapped around Tunnel Mountain on the banks of the frozen Bow River.
Stay: Rimrock Resort Hotel (Superior)
Days
2-3
Banff
Wake for a morning tour of Banff and its eponymous national park. Your expert local guide will point out some of the best viewpoints and any passing wildlife; the region's pristine alpine forests are home to everything from deer and moose to eagles and even rare mountain lions. Then, in the afternoon, head to the stables for a ride on a horse-drawn sleigh through the snow-covered streets. The next morning is free, so perhaps head to the summit of Sulphur Mountain by gondola before an included tour of Johnston Canyon, where your guide will bring you along steel walkways to look down on frozen cascades.

Day
4
Lake Louise
Enjoy a guided tour of Lake Louise, a cerulean expanse of water that freezes over in winter creating one of the world's most spectacular ice rinks. And this is your chance to enjoy it as you don a pair ice skates, or snow shoes if you prefer, for a trip out across the lake. Or, as a cosy alternative, head into the wonderfully cosy confines of the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise to make the most of its indulgent spa.
Stay: Rimrock Resort Hotel (Superior)
Days
5-6
Paint Pots & Banff
It's time to strap on those snow shoes again, this time for a leisurely guided tour into the backcountry of Banff National Park and Paint Pots. There's also the chance to make your own maple taffy in the snow. This calorie-busting treat, made by pouring boiling maple syrup onto fresh snow, is a firm favourite in this part of the world, often seen at winter carnivals and maple syrup festivals across the region. Your final full day is free, so perhaps take an optional dog sledding tour or snowmobiling experience, or hit the slopes for a full day's skiing in one of the very best alpine resorts in the world.

Depart for UK
After a final morning to relax, or explore, it's finally time to head home. Take the express transfer back to Calgary before boarding your overnight flight back to the UK, arriving on day eight.
