Best of holidays | History & culture | Natural world | Self-drive
This tailor-made fly-drive begins with stays in both Dallas and Houston, sophisticated cities grown rich from the spoils of the oil industry. You'll then travel south to the large Spanish city of Corpus Christi on the Gulf of Mexico, where birders can see egrets, herons and roseate hornbills. San Antonio is next, home of the famous Alamo, where in 1836, Texan troops valiantly held out against Mexican opposition for 13 days before being overcome. Continue to the state capital Austin, where every night during summer the world's largest urban bat colony (about 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats) emerges from beneath the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge. Then head into Hill Country and a traditional Texan ranch before finishing your trip in historic Fort Worth, ‘the City of Cowboys and Culture’.
