Conveniently located on the ancient Mediterranean trading route, Mallorca offers the discerning visitor a surprising combination of history, unspoiled traditions and stunning island scenery.
The largest of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca is a perfect short break destination. Packed with a wealth of activities to enjoy and places to explore, it’s easy to travel to from most parts of the UK.
When you arrive, pick up a car at the airport – it’s an easy 40-minute drive to the north, with the mountains along the west coast providing a stunning backdrop. You’ll then have the freedom to explore the island as and when you wish.
The capital city of Palma offers visitors plenty of historic and cultural attractions. Marvel at one of Europe’s grandest cathedrals, including Cathedral (Le Seu), visit the city’s art galleries and museums (we recommend Pilar and Joan Miro Foundation), or soak up the balmy Mediterranean sunshine while meandering the cobbled streets of the Old and Jewish Quarters.
Cruise the picturesque coastline, stopping for a dip in the warm, crystal clear Mediterranean Sea. Once you’ve developed a hunger (or thirst) you’ll find an abundance of seaside restaurants and bars, perfect for enjoying a fresh seafood lunch or refreshing G&T on the outdoor terraces.
Inland you’ll find olive and orange groves and stunning countryside mountain landscapes. The caves at Campanet are well worth spending a couple of hours on your way back to the airport.
There are a number of stunning properties on the island. We recommend the Belmond La Residencia – an award-winning luxury hotel located in the foothills of the Tramuntana Mountains, where poets and writers still seek inspiration to this day (presumably over a glass of fine Rioja or rosé). Alternatively, the Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa is perfect for those looking for a room with a view. Set atop a cliff on Mallorca's Sa Talaia headland, it offers elegantly styled luxury guestrooms and uninterrupted views sweeping across the town of Port Soller and the Mediterranean Sea beyond.
Mallorca is full of surprises, even for the seasoned traveller, and is a perfect summer spot to relax and recharge for a long weekend, or a few days longer if you can spare the time – a worthwhile investment.
