The first time a British royal visited the subcontinent, the towering basalt of the Gateway of India was erected in his honour. Today, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge will find Kerala’s palm-fringed backwaters just as sleepy and Rajasthan’s forts and palaces just as regal as when King George first stepped foot in this unique country.
India’s verdant interior of national park jungles still play host to the leopards and tigers that inspired Rudyard Kipling while the 16th century temples and colonial hill stations of the Himalayan foothills are equally enticing. As the royals continue their journey out of India, head northeast and enjoy a river cruise along the Brahmaputra past tribal villages and tea plantations, or follow in their footsteps and head for Bhutan’s mysterious Buddhist hill temples and golden stupas.
