The Canadian province of Alberta is well-known for its sparkling lakes, verdant forests and pretty mountain towns. But, while there’s plenty of joy to be found in simply admiring the views, the best way to experience the destination is to get in amongst it on a guided tour. Of course, the options are almost endless, but to point you in the right direction, we’ve picked out a selection of favourites below, all of which can be added to our featured Alberta self-drives.

1. The Three Sisters Tour

There’s nothing quite like an aerial view, and a flightseeing tour of Alberta’s Three Sisters Peaks – Hope, Charity, and Faith – offers some of the best in western Canada. As you enter the spectacular Spray Valley Provincial Park, you’ll be greeted by the magnificent Sundance Range where you can observe the Spray Lakes and the rugged peaks of the Canadian Rockies. Your return flight provides equally wonderful views along the Bow River.

2. Columbia Icefield Adventure

This is one of Alberta’s must-dos. Climb aboard an all-terrain Ice Explorer and head onto the surface of the Athabasca Glacier where you’ll explore and learn about the fascinating science and history of this ancient icefield. Stroll along a cliff-edged walkway that leads to the jaw-dropping glass-floored Columbia Icefield Skywalk, separating you from a 918-foot drop to the valley floor.

3. Abraham Lake and Ice Bubbles Adventure

This winter experience features a private helicopter flight to Abraham Lake to witness an incredible natural phenomenon where methane gas freezes beneath the lake surface, creating an incredible landscape of frozen bubbles. Continuing over the snow-laden wonderland, you’ll be whisked away to a high-alpine meadow for a snowshoeing trip to an icy waterfall. Once you’ve enjoyed your hot beverage in the wilderness, climb back aboard your helicopter for the return flight to the base.

4. Jasper Downtown Foodie tour

This is your chance to embrace Jasper’s burgeoning culinary scene as you visit four local food joints, pausing at points of interest and taking in some of Jasper’s tastiest treats along the way. At each restaurant, you’ll have the chance to try a top local dish and a perfectly paired drink, with a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. The local craft beers are a particular delight.

5. Plain of Six Glaciers Hike

Hike Lake Louise’s stunning shoreline, then ascend an ancient glacial valley on this moderate to challenging trek. As you climb high above the lake, and the trail turns to single track, you’ll be treated to unmatched views of the valley below. There’s even the chance to pause for refreshments at the Plain of Six Glaciers Tea House and, fitness levels depending, hike a little higher to take in the beautiful Abbot Pass.
