Introduction
Caye is the term for a coral atoll and in Belize these islets are situated along the country's stunning barrier reef. This is the second largest barrier reef in the world, rich in corals and colourful tropical fish. These islets offer the perfect base from which to explore the subterranean life off the Belizean coast.
More than 450 islands make up this landscape of Cayes and reefs. The largest, Ambergris Caye, is one of the region's most popular water sports and scuba diving centres, while the northern section of Caye Caulker is the perfect spot for kayaking through the region's life-sustaining mangrove swamps.
Visitors here are not limited to exploring beneath the waves, with easy access to the mainland and excursions such the Belize caves and Altun Ha ruins, you can experience the Cayes as part of a larger tour, as well as a destination in its own right.
