Having won multiple awards, this is one the best option for stays in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Each day, you’ll return from included guided walks and canoe rides to the likes of full-board fine dining, eco-friendly bamboo cabanas and a stunning riverside setting.
As one of the first lodges to open in the Ecuadorian Amazon, La Selva styles itself as the country’s premier eco lodge. It’s luxury where you least expect it, with a privileged few bamboo cabanas joined by a spa, superb restaurant and a bar with a view. It will come as no surprise that La Selva has won a suite of awards, including a “World’s Best” accolade from Travel + Leisure. It’s all set on the borders of Yasuni National Park – one of the most biodiverse areas of the planet, which you’ll explore on a full range of included excursions.
Positioned right on the waters of Lake Garzacocha, you’ll be able to enjoy the Amazonian birds and wildlife without even leaving the lodge. It’s a view showcased at the 38-metre-high observation tower, the fully stocked bar and the restaurant, where guests are treated to gourmet, full-board dining. Despite its remote location, you can expect talented chefs to make the most of ultra-fresh fruits and local produce. Be sure to wash it all down with a cocktail.
Further views are taken in by the suites, which look out over either the rainforest or lake with private balconies throughout. Built out of bamboo, they’re a delight of eco-friendly design, featuring the likes of rainforest showers and beautifully canopied beds. In turn, upgrades mix in everything from hammocks to tubs positioned on private porches. Whichever you choose, expect your stay to be sound-tracked by native birdsong.
However, given your setting, you will want to explore. The menu of included excursions is exhaustive, featuring canoe rides, trail hikes and night safaris. Along the way, you’ll hope to spot some of the native wildlife, with highlights including colourful parrots and alien frogs. There’s also the option of upgrading to a private guide. Then, you’ll want to soothe any sightseeing aches with a spa treatment, ranging from reflexology and hot-stone massages to yucca face masks and Amazonian baths.
