Expedition cruise
The latest addition to the Ponant fleet, Le Commandant Charcot is the world’s first luxury icebreaker powered by liquefied natural gas. With its PC2-class strengthened hull, it’s specifically built to access the most remote regions of the Arctic and Antarctica, well beyond the furthest limits of most commercial cruise ships. And, with its sleek, compact design, it feels like a private superyacht, transporting guests to some of the planet's most extraordinary destinations in unparalleled style.
Deep polar exploration
Since its inception, Le Commandant Charcot’s core purpose has been to venture deep into the iciest reaches of the polar circles, offering guests the chance to explore pristine wilderness regions where very few humans ever set foot. Every voyage includes numerous outings by inflatable Zodiac boat, snow tractor or kayak, allowing you to appreciate majestic landscapes and wildlife up close (but always at a safe distance). The onboard expedition team comprises between 19 and 23 experts, including geologists, biologists, glaciologists and naturalist guides, who’ll offer fascinating insights into the flora, fauna and local communities that await. Throughout the journey, these scientific experts will also gladly showcase their work and answer any questions you wish to ask about the places you visit along the way.
An ultra-luxury experience
While adventure remains the primary mission of Le Commandant Charcot, it also offers a supremely luxurious experience as you sail among the highest latitude regions on Earth. With 123 staterooms and suites accommodating a maximum of just 200 guests on polar expeditions, and one of the best staff-to-guest ratios in the industry, a strong emphasis is placed on first-class, personalised service. All accommodation comes with a private balcony or a terrace, complimentary Wi-Fi access (availability dependent on navigation and latitude), a fully-stocked mini bar, a Nespresso coffee machine and a spacious en-suite bathroom with premium Diptyque toiletries. The highest category suites, meanwhile, feature the likes of private Jacuzzis, extra-large terraces and panoramic views.
Elsewhere throughout the ship, you’ll find plenty of spaces for relaxation, including elegant communal lounges, an outdoor ‘Blue Lagoon’ pool, an indoor pool, saunas and massage cabins. And, when it comes to the culinary offering, you can choose between two restaurants – one buffet, one à la carte – serving gourmet international and French-inspired cuisine, including signature dishes by Michelin-starred chef, Alain Ducasse. There’s an outdoor grill as well, available subject to the weather conditions. Themed afternoon teas are also provided and, of course, unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are included as part of the open-bar policy.
Eco-friendly sailing technologies
As well as being the world’s first luxury icebreaker powered by liquefied natural gas, Le Commandant Charcot is fitted with the largest battery bank ever installed on a cruise ship, enabling it to sail quietly and with zero emissions in protected areas. Together with its market-leading waste reduction, ban on single-use plastics, efficient energy consumption and eco-friendly landing protocols, it minimises its environmental impact, paving the way for a new era of safe and responsible deep polar exploration.
