Introduction
The three Gili Islands - Trawangan, Air and Meno - are all stunningly beautiful: three drops in the ocean off the north-west coast of Lombok, sprinkled with palm trees and bordered by pristine beaches and clear blue waters that teem with sharks, rays and turtles.
The lack of motorised transport - horse and cart is the best way to get around - adds an air of serenity, while a ban on building any higher than the treetops has kept a handle on development. That's not to say that stylish accommodation can't be found on the islands; Trawangan in particular boasts some luxury villas, where open-plan living rooms and open-air bathrooms spill out onto pool decks and manicured gardens.
Snorkelling and diving are the main draws here and there are numerous dive schools on each of the three islands, catering to everyone, from beginner to instructor.
