Introduction
Winter sports are a popular activity in the area around Nagano, a compact provincial city that hosted the Winter Olympics in 1998; an excellent public transport system and assorted Olympic buildings are the legacy of the Games.
Year round, tourists come to the city to visit the temple of Zenko-ji, home to the first image of Buddha in Japan, before heading out into the Alps or to see the snow monkeys at Yudanaka Onsen.
