The 135-million-year-old Daintree rainforest is the oldest in the world. It is a vast, exotic living museum, home to the largest range of plants and animals in the world. Once you cross the Daintree River north toward Cape Tribulation you are entering an untouched and ancient region where a 4WD vehicle is a must. Cape Tribulation – where the reef meets the rainforest – is the only place in the world where two World Heritage-listed areas meet and as you move further north into the Cape York Peninsula, the region’s remoteness only increases. The spectacular Mossman Gorge, near Port Douglas, is a very scenic and accessible section of the Daintree where you can witness powerful strangler figs, the rare Boyd’s Forest Dragon and the crystal-clear Mossman River cascading over huge granite boulders.
