Introduction

Buenos Aires is Argentina's capital and the country's largest city. One of South America's most exciting capitals, it's the modern cultural hub of Argentina, with an insatiable appetite for a good party.

Buenos Aires is strikingly European in appearance, with grand baroque buildings lining the central streets and ornate street lamps standing delicately at each corner. The soul of the city however belongs wholeheartedly to the porteños - the city's residents - whose vibrant passions energise the capital. Each night, they take to the city's bars and clubs en masse and whether you find yourself on a street corner or in Buenos Aires' grandest concert halls, the tango is inescapable. Argentina is, after all, where the tango dance first originated, a fact evidently not lost on the Buenos Aires locals.

Buenos Aires's historical landmarks are many, and the city's comfortable climate makes this a perfect place for sightseeing.

In the heart of the city is the Plaza de Mayo, the centre of power and home to the grand Metropolitan Cathedral, while close by is the city's oldest colonial building, the Jesuit church of San Ignacio de Loyola. Buenos Aires also has a proliferation of interesting museums and galleries, which tell the historical and cultural story of this great city and of Argentina as a whole.

A trip to the capital is a great introduction to Argentina and a highly recommended inclusion on a tailor-made holiday.
