Introduction
An adventurous destination, little visited Paraguay is slowly building a reputation as a place to see. Panama travel is yet to truly take off but it won't be long before numbers of travellers here start to grow.
The capital Asunción has a variety of architectural styles on display and a number of attractions to distract and detain you. East of the capital lies Ciudad del Este, the fastest growing town in the country. A good base for trips to Iguazú Falls and the Monday Falls, it's a cosmopolitan place.
Paraguay has 11 national parks and protected areas including Parque Nacional Ybycui, which is full of butterflies and waterfalls. River cruises are a good way to explore the wilderness, with the journey from Asunción to Concépcion on the Río Paraguay particularly scenic.
The plains and forests of the Chaco, one of South America's great wilderness areas, cover more than half of Paraguay. The region contains several national parks, biological reserves and protected forests that are rich in bird and animal numbers.
