Puno is Peru's folklore capital, melding ancient Aymara and Quechua civilisations with colonial influences.

A rich diversity of festivals and a tradition of music and dance has made Puno an important cultural centre.

Puno is also a great place to buy local handicrafts, particularly alpaca jumpers and hats. In many of the nearby old traditional villages Spanish is a second language and ancient myths and beliefs are still held.
