This exceptional, eco-minded retreat is Alila’s flagship mountain resort in Oman, voted the number one resort in the Middle East in the 2025 Condé Nast readers awards. Seamlessly blending local heritage, dramatic natural surroundings and refined contemporary design, it offers a truly atmospheric base from which to experience one of the Sultanate’s most spectacular regions.
Location
Spectacularly positioned high in the Al Hajar mountain range, Alila Jabal Akhdar – whose name translates as ‘Green Mountain’ – enjoys an extraordinary sense of remoteness, surrounded by rugged terrain and sweeping canyon views. Sitting around 2,000 metres above sea level, the journey itself adds to the adventure, with access via mountain roads typically requiring a four-wheel drive vehicle.
Built using local stone and traditional Omani construction techniques, the resort clings to the edge of a dramatic gorge, its architecture carefully designed to sit in harmony with the surrounding landscape. Despite the wild setting, the atmosphere is one of understated luxury, where thoughtful design and modern comforts come together effortlessly.
Accommodation
The resort is home to 86 spacious suites and villas, arranged in low-rise clusters that ensure privacy and uninterrupted views over the canyon or mountains. Interiors are calm and contemporary, inspired by Omani culture and natural textures, with warm earth tones, handcrafted details and generous outdoor terraces that blur the line between indoors and out. Large bathrooms are filled with natural light and offer views across the surrounding scenery.
All accommodation features modern amenities including Wi-Fi, satellite television and climate control. Ridge View Suites sit on the upper level and look directly into the gorge, while Horizon Suites on the ground floor offer expansive outdoor seating areas. The Jabal Terrace Suite boasts an oversized deck ideal for sunset views and stargazing. For the ultimate indulgence, the exclusive Jabal Villas offer private pools and expansive living space in a secluded setting
Dining
Juniper, the resort’s signature restaurant, takes its name from the juniper trees native to the region and showcases locally inspired cuisine alongside international flavours. The dining space is bright and welcoming, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing the mountain views and creating a memorable backdrop for every meal. Menus celebrate fresh ingredients and regional influences, thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented.
The Rose Lounge provides a more relaxed setting for light bites, afternoon tea or evening drinks, either indoors or out on the terrace overlooking the canyon. Guests can also enjoy a curated selection of wines and cocktails, a notable feature in this part of Oman.
Facilities
Facilities include a well-equipped fitness centre, library and comfortable communal lounges, as well as a striking infinity pool overlooking the canyon and a heated indoor pool. The Spa Alila offers a tranquil sanctuary with a range of holistic treatments inspired by ancient wellness traditions, alongside steam rooms and relaxation spaces.
For those keen to explore, the resort offers guided experiences that highlight the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the region, including hiking trails, village walks and seasonal activities on the Saiq Plateau, where Damask roses bloom in spring.
