Location
Hidden away among the Marlborough Sounds, this member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World is tucked up in a rolling landscape of untouched native bush that spills down to the shoreline of a tranquil bay. It’s only reached by water taxi but we suggest taking your time with a seafood cruise from Picton. Leaving around 1 pm, it’s a four-hour laze through the sheltered inlets and sandy bays of the sounds where carpeted green islands are the only things to interrupt still, clear waters. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to try local oysters, giant green lip mussels and bright salmon, all washed down with an equally local sauvignon blanc. Once arrived, internationally-renowned walking tracks can help you discover the islands’ interiors.
Accommodation
Whether it’s a suite or multi-roomed apartment, you’ll enjoy the best in five star luxury. Step out from warm wood interiors to secluded spa decks that shelter among Kowhai groves and look out over Arthur’s Bay to the mountains of Queen Charlotte Sound beyond. Back inside, fine linens, traditional artwork and contemporary seating areas make for stylish stays while oversized windows invite in those stunning views, bathing the rooms in natural light. Complimentary WiFi and full entertainment systems ensure that you’re not without your more modern comforts. It’s also worth noting that there are one, two and three bed options available.
Dining
Apartment living gives you every chance at private dining with fine gastronomy from the lodge’s restaurants, spread over the Foredeck Restaurant, Kumatage Guest Lounge and Bight Café. Unsurprisingly, given its location, you’ll be treated to world-class seafood and wines throughout. Enjoy candlelit dinners matched by sommelier-paired labels, freshly cooked gourmet breakfasts served with barista coffee and indulgent light café bites. It’s all served up with those stunning views and with a winner’s seal from the Beef and Lamb Excellence Awards.
Facilities
At the Bay of Many Coves, safe beaches, a heated outdoor pool, a cedar hot tub and plenty of sun loungers provide ample place to relax. There’s even a full complement of bespoke massages, therapies and beauty treatments available at the Miritu Day Sap in spring and summer. To help you explore, you’ll have use of the lodge’s dinghies, boat moorings, paddleboards and sea kayaks – perfect for dipping in and out of the sounds’ inlets and coves.
