Location
Hawke’s Bay, tucked into the lower eastern side of the North Island, is rich in both Maori culture and culinary adventure. It’s become something of a gourmet hotspot with farmers’ markets, wineries and superb restaurants making the most of the region’s delicacies, whether they be from from ocean, farm or vineyard. The lodge itself is hidden away in Omarunui Valley, near Napier. This delightful town was almost entirely destroyed in 1931, only to be rebuilt in a charming Art Deco style. Outside civilisation, the area is also ripe for hikes, horse rides, hunting, fishing and cycling.
Accommodation
Each of the lodge’s guestrooms offer spectacular views over the vineyards of Hawke’s Bay. It’s an expansive rural landscape, improved only by sliding full-length doors that open onto private patios, complete with a seating area. It’s a bucolic vista that has inspired the room’s décor; timber headboards, delicate floral patterns and stained wood furnishings all contribute to a perfectly traditional aesthetic.
Dining
Your host, chef Malcolm Redmond, having worked with Michelin starred kitchens across the world, uses only the freshest seasonal produce, sourced from his organic garden and local markets. In fact, thanks to Hawke’s Bay’s proximity to the ocean, its climate and rich agriculture, the region is quickly making a name for itself on the world stage. In particular, stone fruits such as peaches, avocados and cherries abound. As you’d then imagine, dining plays an important role at Breckenridge Lodge, with the dinner menu spanning five degustation courses. Expect dishes such as watermelon and ginger soup with garlic prawns and pan-fired scallops served over vanilla bacon, all paired with a superb vintage from the local wineries.
Facilities
The dining room is the house’s focal point, thanks to Malcolm’s cooking and its rural aspect over the vineyard. You’ll also spend some time in the fire-warmed guest lounge where French doors lead out onto a patio and more of those gorgeous views. Be sure to head out and explore with two acres of grounds to discover. Tracks lead among lavender gardens, fruit tree orchards and a wildlife pond. There’s even a pizza oven hidden away.
