Location
Positioned on the sheltered east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, Brenton Lodge gazes out to the turquoise sea – a view interrupted only by carpeted island crags. It’s also set on an acre of immaculate gardens just outside the pretty town of Whangamata. Here, you’ll get the best of both worlds, enjoying quiet seclusion and access to its superlative beach, ideal for sunbathing, swimming and surfing. There is also a collection of relaxing coastal walks on offer along with treks and bike rides through Tairua Forest or Coromandel Forest Park, which borders the town. If golf is more your style, the lodge can even supply a willing course buddy.
Accommodation
Privately accessed rooms all feature balconies or decks that offer panoramic sea views, complemented by the lodge’s lush gardens. Prime among the accommodation are the Moana and Tui cottages. Overlooking Mayor Island, their characterful furnishing and timber detailing is nothing short of charming. The two suites – either positioned in the main building or adjacent – are equally inviting, set beneath the timber gables. Their open plan layout is especially considered, promoting a real sense of space.
Dining
This being rural New Zealand, you can expect breakfasts both hearty and healthy. Juices, seasonal fruit platters, homemade yoghurt, cereals and toast come as standard along with a range of cooked options. There arefull cooked breakfasts, stuffed omelettes, sweet crepes and eggs benedict, served with New Zealand smoked salmon and an English muffin. If you want to dine at the lodge for dinner or lunch, please enquire ahead. The candlelit three course dinner is especially good; expect home cooked delights with a gourmet twist. Otherwise, Whangamata itself features a range of dining options.
Facilities
To add something special to your stay, ask about organising either a tasting platter, seafood platter or bottle of champagne for your arrival along with a massage for two. Otherwise, you can relax by the lounge’s fireside and in the bar or, in the summer, by the pool. However, don’t forget to head out and explore; there’s walks to forgotten old mines, artisan crafts, charter boat fishing and a whole host of beaches to keep you occupied.
