Camelthorn Lodge, Hwange National Park

Location

Tucked away in the acacia woodlands of Hwange National Park’s southeastern corner, Camelthorn is just west of the famous Ngamo Plains. These seemingly endless grasslands host a stunning array of wildlife, with zebras, elephants, lions and migratory birds all vying for your attention. And this spectacularly unspoilt section is reached by an hour-long charter plane from Victoria Falls or Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second city. Airport transfers are included. Alternatively, road transfers can bring you through the national park itself, making for scenic trips.  

Accommodation

Accommodation comes in the form of just eight, luxuriously furnished forest villas. Each comes with both a private deck and an upstairs maisonette, complete with hammock and day bed, meaning that you’ll be able to make the most of Hwange’s wildlife without even leaving your room. With the lodge’s surrounding woodlands dotted with water baths that attract everything from mongoose to squirrels, there’s plenty to see. But it’s not just the location that’s impressive, with stone walls, spiral stairways, fireplaces and sliding glass doors contributing to a delightfully contemporary aesthetic.

Dining

Depending on the season, you’ll have the option of taking your meals al fresco on the terrace or next to the three roaring fireplaces of the dining room. Whichever you choose, you’ll be treated to all-inclusive dining, with a flexible kitchen dishing up regional offerings alongside more recognisable favourites. And, starting your day with a sunrise coffee or ending it with a sundowner, all drinks are complimentary, including wines, beers and local spirits.  

Facilities

The beautifully thatched main lodge is centred round an ancient camelthorn tree, with lounges, an open-fronted bar and welcoming terraces arranged in a horseshoe. Of course, you’ll also want to get out and explore on the stunning range of included activities. Hwange National Park is home to over 100 species of mammals – see for yourself on game drives, walks and night safaris. There’s also the chance to get a taste of rural village life with a visit to a local school. However, you needn’t step out far on your excursions, with the lodge’s underground hide less than a kilometre away. Here, you’ll be hidden at feet level, getting right up close to the elephants that come to drink.
