Location
Situated upon a high bank with viewing decks over the Great Fish River, the 15,800 hectare reserve is set on the edge of Karoo Basin. The Kwandwe landscape is dominated by thousands of animal species, including the ‘Big Five’, alongside an array of plants, floras and fauna upon valley Bushveld. The private game reserve is easily accessible, a 30-minute self-drive from Grahamstown or roughly 160km from Port Elizabeth Airport to Kwandwe.
Accommodation
The nine suites accommodating guests had been designed to ensure guests can take full advantage of the beautiful surroundings. Floor to ceiling windows provide views of the uninterrupted wilderness, whilst the en-suite bathrooms and both indoor and outdoor showers display the landscape beyond. In keeping with the indulgent tones of the lodge, each suite features a spacious thatched veranda and private and luxurious plunge pool with terrace.
Dining
African inspired meals and sumptuous local cuisine infused with classic French and Karoo traditions and flavours can be served either on private viewing deck, the candlelit dining room, within the boma or at any of the awe-inspiring locations across the reserve. All dishes incorporate seasonal produce sourced locally, including meat, seafood, vegetables and herbs.
Facilities
Activities focus upon guided walks and safaris: safaris tend to take place early morning and evening, with opportunities of spotting larger animals- such as giraffe, in addition to the ‘Big Five’. Guided walks include picnics, for those opting for a more relaxed day, at which you can fish at the Great Fish River, after which the lodge was named. If guests are looking for a little more out of their trip, rhino darting and tailor made safaris can be arranged, alongside taking to the skies in a fixed wing aircraft- fly over whales and dolphins along the coastline or the largest active sand dunes in the southern hemisphere.
