Location
Set in historic Rittenhouse Square – one of William Penn’s original five green spaces – this stylish hotel is just steps away from the myriad attractions of downtown Philadelphia. Visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Edgar Allan Poe’s house and the Eastern State Penitentiary – ‘America’s Most Historic Prison’. Philadelphia’s also experiencing something of an arts revival with a range of fantastic theatres and galleries while baseball and NFL keep their vice-like grip on the hearts and minds of the city’s denizens. More locally, Rittenhouse Row’s period facades house gourmet restaurants and artisan cafés.
Accommodation
Despite its vintage appeal, this boutique hotel invites the arts scene in with contemporary style and features; there are Frette linens on the bed and Bigelow spa-inspired products in the bathroom along with recycled glass tiles and a marble vanity. Rooms come in a variety of sizes and some feature city views across Philadelphia’s historic steeples. For extra relaxation, spa rooms come with oversized soaking tubs, standalone showers and bathrooms with a view. There’s also the 1175 sq. feet Presidential Suite.
Dining
Just adjacent to the hotel, Square 1682 eschews gastronomic fads in favour of high quality dishes where locally sourced ingredients shine. Executive Chef Caitlin Mateo serves American cuisine through an international lens with dishes such as Lancaster duck breast accompanied by five spice heirloom carrots, wild mushroom and brie tart and filet mignon. It’s no surprise that it’s Philadelphia’s first LEED-certified green eatery and bar.
Facilities
With your body and mind in mind, the hotel puts on a complimentary bike hire service along with yoga mats in every room and a state of the art fitness centre with a range of cardio equipment and personal trainers available on request. All guests are invited to the wine hour, where hand-selected, socially responsible wines are the perfect start to the evening. After a day’s sightseeing, there’s an in-room spa service with a variety of massages and body treatments.
