Location
With direct access to Swakopmund’s beach, the Artemis Hotel Swakopmund (formerly the Zum Kaiser) is in a prime location. This seaside town, once a cool getaway for colonialists and locals looking to escape the heat, has become a lively holiday destination steeped in history. 280 km west of the Namibian capital Windhoek, the town is full of delightful turn of the century colonial architecture and also plays host to flamingos and huge colonies of Cape fur seals. Swakopmund’s town boarders give way to the Namib Desert where tourists can visit spectacular sand dunes and camel farms or play a round on one of the world’s only all grass desert golf courses.
Accommodation
The hotel’s small size helps underline the intimate, friendly atmosphere created by the welcoming staff. All of the 21 en-suite rooms are carefully decorated in a contemporary take on colonial style with off-white furniture highlighting subtle touches of colour around the room. Front-facing luxury double and twin rooms come with balconies that boast views of the Atlantic seaboard – a perfect vantage point to watch the sun set over the ocean. The 35 square meter suite also has a fireplace and an oversized bath.
Dining
Dinner is served by the roaring fire in the onsite restaurant. The menu incorporates traditional German-Namibian flavours, often with a contemporary twist. Serving exceptional local seafood, expect dishes such as grilled oysters in butter win sauce and pan-fried sole. There are also excellent Namibian steaks on offer and vegetarians are equally well catered for. Food is diligently paired with award-winning wines. The Bistro is also open for 'breakfast feasts' and serves a wide selection of light meals at lunch.
Facilities
A favourite amongst guests is the roof terrace overlooking the sea where you can enjoy an intimate sundowner from the bar. There’s also the spa, which offers a range of treatments from tailored fully body massages to reflexology and Indian head massages. The hotel also puts on a variety of activities such as balloon safaris with desert and ocean views or seal and dolphin cruises. There’s also town tours and, for the more adventurous, there’s even sky diving, sand boarding and quad biking. Finally, the porter service ensures guests are well cared for during their stay.
