Location
This standalone village features 12 acres of terraced hills, rivers and waterfalls all plied by winding stone pathways that lead through its verdant cloud forest. It’s the pristine home to no less that 214 bird species – including the golden-headed quetzal and the iconic Andean cock-of-the-rock. You’ll also find the world’s largest collection of native orchids, with some 370 species registered. And, when combined with the 111 butterflies, this luxury getaway is a true botanist and zoologist’s dream. In all, it’s the perfect springboard to explore Machu Picchu with trailheads along with the Aguas Calientes bus and train station all within easy walking distance.
Accommodation
And, scattered throughout its gardens, you’ll find 85 standalone casitas and villas. These luxury whitewashed cottages recall that elusive rural ideal in their terracotta tiled roofs and exposed beams while interiors are similarly authentic featuring Andean furniture, intimate dining areas and those signature Peruvian fabrics, resplendent in multi-coloured beauty. Upgrade for wood burning stoves and suites that feature private gardens where covered terraces, heated plunge pools, outdoor showers and oversize day beds make for indulgent stays. Villas add in larger rooms and a 24-hours butler service.
Dining
At the resort’s glass-walled restaurant guests are treated to views over the Vilcanota River and out to surrounding mountains; it’s the ideal backdrop to the kitchen’s creative fusion cuisine. Get closer with the option to dine on the outdoor terrace. You should also expect new life to be breathed into traditional delights with contemporary presentation and refined culinary techniques. For dessert, you’ll find some experimental ventures in eucalyptus ice-cream and quinoa cheesecake while grilled river fish favourites are a real highlight.
Facilities
After exploring the trails and sights of Machu Picchu, soothe any hiking aches in the world-class spa. Combing modern best practice with Andean tradition, all products used are derived from local botanical extracts with everything from reflexology and massages to hot stones and exfoliation treatments available. For something a bit special, consider taking your treatment in the comfort of your room. Alternatively make use of the range of included services; there are welcome teas, buffet breakfasts and complimentary pisco sours to help you settle in. Alternatively, book into a cooking class or treat your little ones to a scavenger hunt among what has to be the world’s greatest architectural treasure trove.
