Location
This safari lodge offers a true, authentic feeling of African history. Incredible views span across the Kamp due to its remarkably high location on a ridge. Situated in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve, sightings of the spotted hyena, buffalo, white rhino, leopard and elephants are frequent. Situated in the eastern part of South Africa, the Kamp is a five and a half hour journey from Johannesburg, or a short journey by air to a nearby private airstrip. The Sabi Sand Game Reserve shares an unfenced border with Kruger National Park, allowing African wildlife to move freely, and for a real ‘in the wild’ experience.
Accommodation
The well-known historic camp celebrates the atmosphere of early South African lowveld homestead, decorated in early colonial style and retained gracious and luxurious atmosphere. Each of the 18 guest cottages own a private veranda overlooking the Sand River, with en-suite facilities featuring ball and claw baths, complemented by magnificent views of the surrounding bush. Following a December 2015 renovation, new French doors open out onto the verandah, giving a fabulous 'old world' feel to the camp.
Dining
The kitchen team of Kirkman’s Kamp thrive off creating meals that exude Africa’s essence of richness and soul, celebrating the continent opposed to adopting Western meals. Fresh food is accumulated from the surrounding communities, ranging from sun-ripened tomatoes to wild rice, ensuring the food is wholesome, natural and generous. The self-described menu boasts robust, vibrant dishes bursting with flavours, rustic and simple dishes served around the evening boma.
Facilities
Game drives occur early in the morning and late afternoon, accompanied by open 4x4 safari vehicles and a tracking team and ranger, guiding guests to spot the most wanted and popular animals on the reserve. Tailor-made guided walking tours can be arranged, allowing guests to explore the African Bush from a whole new perspective in addition to birding, historical tours, specialist safaris and photographic safaris.
