Location
Set right on the shores of Lake Elmenteita, this luxury camp enjoys truly privileged views complemented by some of Kenya’s finest bird watching experiences. Jogging and walking tracks showcase the pretty verdure, while next-door Lake Nakuru excites with countless flamingos. There’s also Soysambu, a 480,000-acre wildlife conservancy where rocky islands dot alkaline lakes and reaching wetlands alike. It’s all home to everything from great white pelicans and 450 species of birds to big cats and Rothschild giraffes. There’s also the Stone Age fascination of the nearby Kariandusi Prehistoric Site.
Accommodation
Accommodation at Lake Elmenteita Serena Camp comes in the form of 24 luxury tents, each host to idyllic lake views best taken in on the private verandah. Perfectly airy, high-ceilinged canvas looks down on dark-wood floorboards and four-poster beds are dressed evocatively in flowing drapes. Timber campaign furnishing continues the aesthetic, recalling all the chic of the 1920s safari heyday – today paired with wireless internet. The Flamingo Suite is particularly impressive, host to a spacious lounge, Jacuzzi and prime lake views.
Dining
Continuing the accommodation’s delightful styling, the dining room is also set under canvas, with open sides inviting in the lake breeze. Gourmet dinners are beautifully presented, with roast joints of meat a special favourite. However, this being Kenya, you can expect a range of choices, mapping the country’s myriad influences. Seasonally changing menus showcase everything from classic Italian dishes to delicately fragranced Indian curries. Inspired? Book onto a complimentary cooking lesson with the camp’s chef.
Facilities
While you’ll want to spend your time exploring on guided game drives, the camp’s range of included activities is perfect for some post-safari relaxation. Learn the art of recurve archery, listen in to naturalist talks or have a go at watercolours by the lake. There’s even a full range of educational lessons, from botany to Swahili. Or, simply enjoy a soak in the pool before ending the day with a sundowner by the lake or barbecue dinner in the bush.
