The Masai Mara
Travelling in a small group, you’ll be brought southwest – through fields of barley and past chapel-capped escarpments – to arrive at the Masai Mara. Staying right on a bush-clad hilltop, your room, the pool terrace and full-board restaurant offer spectacular views of the savannah below. You’ll also explore on a programme of twice-daily game drives. On top of the famed Big Five, there are hippos crouching in the Mara River along with the ‘Greatest Wildlife Show on Earth’ – the wildebeest migration. Sweeping on through the barley fields of Kenya’s ‘Bread Basket’, you’ll plunge down into the Great Rift Valley, its verdant plains framed by rocky crags. Then, keeping your eyes out for herds of giraffe and gazelle, you’ll head up the Mai Mahiu to arrive at Nakuru National Park, enjoying an included picnic lunch. Arranged around a shimmering lake bright with flamingos, it’s the evocative setting for your game drive. There’s everything from black and white rhinos to the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe. Today, leaving the Great Rift Valley behind, you’ll sweep northwest to the feet of Mt. Kilimanjaro. And, along with golden savannah and bright-green swamps, Africa’s tallest peak is the dramatic backdrop to your evocative accommodation, styled after a Maasai manyatta village. While you’ll be able to watch as wildebeest and antelopes come in to graze while you enjoy your full-board dining, you’ll also head out on a pair of game drives. Thanks to its sparse vegetation, it’s one of the best places in the world to get close to wild elephants. Your wildlife experts will also point out the likes of cheetah, plains zebras and Maasai lions.
