Location
Set among Argentina’s craggy north dominated by an Andes backbone, Salta is slice of civilisation in a dramatic landscape. Here, colonial gems are mixed with Latin rhythms in lively peñas (folk music venues) and atmospheric cafés, each lining pretty plazas and winding backstreets. You’ll stay in its historic old quarter, just a short distance from the city’s excellent art and history museums along with the ornate, pink Baroque of Salta’s cathedral. Cable cars and railways lead you out of the city to views of the region’s fertile valleys, famous throughout the country for their tobacco plantations.
Accommodation
Akin to its sister-hotel in the capital, rooms here are named after mythical figures and famous characters from the Salta’s past with writers, artists, musicians, historians and even gauchos all represented. As such, rooms are as individual and characterful as their namesakes, however they all share an appreciation for clean lines and modern design with contemporary four-poster beds, hydro-massage bathtubs and subtle splashes of colour. On the ground floor, rooms come with a private patio while others come with French balconies.
Dining
Breakfast is included in the nightly tariff and is served on dark wood furniture in the characterful morning room. It’s a European affair with freshly baked bread, fruit salads, cereals, cold cuts, cheeses and medialunas – the local croissants. Eggs are cooked on request and it’s all washed down with freshly squeezed orange juice and a variety of teas. While there’s no restaurant in the hotel, Legado Mitico puts on a small menu of local snacks – think delicately flavoured humitas, tamales and locro stew – and Western classics. Staff are more than happy to recommend restaurants for something more substantial with local markets serving authentic regional food and fine dining concepts all available nearby.
Facilities
A pillow menu and WiFi access add the creature comforts to already well-appointed rooms while the hotel proper centres around the handsome bar area. Here, fine Argentinian vintages are available by the bottle or glass all accompanied by local cheeses and cold meats. There’s also a lounge cum library to be enjoyed with a magazine or novel on the local culture. But, thanks to the hotel’s excellent position, you’ll want to head out to explore such landmarks as the Museum of High Altitude Archaeology and the 18th-century city hall while further afield there’s the Hill of Seven Colours and the excellent Salta wine region.
