Location

Built into a spur above the accommodation’s beach, Marino Ridge enjoys truly stunning views out over its bay and onto the ocean beyond. Watch as the fish and seabirds hunt and feed while, on occasion, dolphins and orca have been known to make an appearance. And, sheltered from prevailing westerly breezes with sun from dawn until dusk, it’s ideal for those lazy afternoons. In all, it’s a jewel on the spectacular northwestern end of Waiheke Island, featuring three and a half acres of native bush and gardens that spill down towards a near private pebble swimming beach. It’s an ideal spot for everything from fishing to kayaking.

Accommodation

In the Maori language, ‘marino’ means calm or still; something that Geoff Richards – one of New Zealand’s most respected architects – took on board in creating a perfectly balanced design. As a result, each suite features great views, whether it’s out west to the city, north to the Gulf Islands or east and south to the Coromandel Coast. Back inside, all-suite accommodation makes the most of the panoramas with floor-to-ceiling windows and private balconies while restored furniture, wool throws and underfloor heating makes for comfortable stays. WiFi, luxury linens and massage rain showers round off the amenities.

Dining

Given that there are only three suites, Marino Ridge does not offer dining. That being said, be sure to enjoy a complimentary drink or two along with canapés before heading out for the evening. Waiheke Island is something of a hotbed for fresh cuisine and its central dining destination is jut a few hundred metres – as the seagull flies – from Marino Ridge. Here you’ll find plenty of New Zealand steak, just-caught seafood and restaurants that cook from their gardens. What’s more, the island’s viticulture is equally enticing with world-class wineries offering tasting sessions and wine paired meals alike.

Facilities

Scattered throughout the property, you’ll find plenty of places to relax with views of bush, beach and bay. Whether it’s lounging al fresco on the day bed or enjoying the warmth of the fire both inside and out, you’ll have every opportunity to relax. Guest areas including a combined lounge and dining room, exercise room, a library, cocktail patio, a breakfast verandah and a 16-metre swimming pool and spa tub, both of which are heated in the summer. Heading out, there are several tracks and even a private helipad.
