Location
The camp is situated in the eastern part of the national park, one of the largest of its kind in southern Africa. The fort’s rich 100-year history has seen it used as a colonial German outpost, a police station and a South African army base before its transformation into the boutique safari lodge that it is today. Accessible by the Von Lindequest Gate, the camp’s proximity to the sometime lake at Fisher’s Pan makes it an excellent base for birdwatchers and those looking for sightings of leopards, cheetahs, elephants and lions.
Accommodation
Carefully renovated, Namutoni’s whitewashed walls subtly complement the dark wooden furnishings and traditional Namibian artwork on display throughout the lodge. The spacious chalets come with a patio area and the private outdoor showers are a refreshing touch. The slightly smaller double rooms are equally well furnished and decorated with artisan styling that incorporates traditional materials with modern chic. Interconnecting wooden walkways link the accommodation and add to the rural fort’s unique atmosphere.
Dining
Namutoni has two dining options. The African Fusion restaurant offers contemporary takes on traditional, southern African dishes. Think locally sourced prawns, juicy game and assorted hotpots. Namutoni’s other restaurant, The Steakhouse offers more than just its namesake with a menu that focuses on popular western dishes to match everyone’s tastes. Buffet lunches are de rigueur ensuring you’re well prepared for afternoon jeep safaris. A particular favourite for breakfast is the made-to-order omelettes courtesy of Namutoni’s flexible and accommodating chefs.
Facilities
While almost the entirety of Etosha National Park is accessible by self-drive, so you can explore the location’s wildlife and unique landscape at your leisure, you may wish to take advantage of the camp’s experienced guides. With many animals more active in the cooler evenings, a definite highlight is the organised night safaris. Back at the fort, shaded balconies offer views over the waterhole while both the bar and pool are designed to provide welcome relief from the African sun.
