Regularly voted amongst the world’s leading hotels, this adults-only Costa Rican resort – sister property of the adjacent Nayara Resort, Spa & Gardens – is truly stunning. It’s set beside a creek, pristine rainforest and the Arenal volcanic national park, home to a huge concentration of wildlife and tropical plants.

The hotel is no more than a sprinkle of secluded and extremely sophisticated villas, adding to the middle-of-nowhere vibe. Each is enormous, and each has a private plunge pool, fed by the natural hot springs that run through the grounds. In addition there are two generously sized pools in the gardens, as well as a lap pool and a swim-up bar, and the cuisine is rated as amongst the best in the country.

The spa is a wonderfully relaxing addition, too, and includes treatment rooms in the forest canopy, where guests can enjoy massages, facials, scrubs and wraps, as well as a small gym and a yoga pavilion. There’s so much to indulge in onsite that it can be hard to leave, but wildlife tours on offer are unmissable.
