Location
The key to the camp’s location is its floodlit watering hole 17km inside the southern boundary of the park. With the park not opening until sunrise, you can beat the tourists and watch the dawn-time activity of big cats from the undisturbed comfort of your own base. It’s also the best place in the park to observe the rare and endangered black rhino. The national park is also home to the Etosha Pan – visible from space it’s the largest saltpan in Africa. Its dramatic and distinctive expanse of shimmering green and white offers spectacular wildlife viewing and even plays host to up to one million migrating flamingos.
Accommodation
Due to its prime location, Okaukuejo is the park’s most popular camp. As such, it has a variety of lodgings to suit all tastes. At the top end there’s the exclusive Waterhole Chalets, whose balconies and patios overlook feeding wildlife. The Bush Chalets, set slightly further back, include a braai (traditional southern Africa barbecue) area and generous living spaces. More budget options exist in the en suite double rooms and, for true nature-lovers, there’s also the campsite.
Dining
Dinner is served buffet-style in the camp’s central restaurant and presents a great chance to swap safari sightings with fellow guests. Al-fresco dining completes the authentic African lodge feel but, for those wanting to escape the heat, inside seating is available as well. The menu has a wide range of hearty options with typically Namibian gamey flavours but also has plenty of vegetarian options as well. For the back-to-nature experience, guests can also make use of the outdoor barbecue facilities.
Facilities
With some of the best wildlife viewing in the park available on your doorstep, it’s easy to forget that there’s a lot more to see. The camp runs game drives with highly experienced guides that are experts at tracking down everything from leopards to meerkats. Jeep safaris are also a great way of seeing some of the unique terrain that Etosha has to offer such as the Etosha Pan and Dolomite Hills. And, after a long African summer’s day, guests can cool down with a dip in the pool or sip on a sundowner at the waterhole or in the camp’s bar.
