About

Recommended for:
Activity adventure | Wildlife

Quirpon offers an island experience in a fully restored lighthouse which dates back to 1922. Quirpon Lighthouse offers just 10 rooms and is a Registered Heritage Building. Boasting such a northern location, this is quite simply one of the best places in Newfoundland for viewing the ‘bergs’ as they are carried south on the Labrador Current. There is also an unsurpassed marine food supply which explains why your iceberg viewing is likely to be interrupted by whales. It is not uncommon to see orcas, seals and porpoises as well as the ever-so frequent humpback’s and minke.

Location

Transport to the island is by boat, which docks just a short distance from the start of the Viking Trail and L’Anse aux Meadows, both of which are well worth a visit. Depending on the weather a short hike to the lighthouse may be required.

Accommodation

Offering just 10 beautifully restored rooms in two houses, this is a rare opportunity to stay in an operating lighthouse. Rooms are comfortable with private bathrooms whilst retaining the architectural heritage of the inn. Breakfast and dinner is included.

Facilities

Once on the island there are guided kayak and zodiac tours (not included) and plenty of well-marked walking trails to fill the hours. There are also lots of places for whale watching and iceberg viewing, including a covered whale watching station.
