Location
Located in what was an old maritime centre in Strahan on Tasmania’s beautiful west coast, Risby Cove is an ideal base from which to explore both the town itself as well as the surrounding rainforest and coast. It’s about 300km from Tasmania’s state capital, Hobart, meaning it’s something of a gateway for boats, planes and helicopters that take visitors to this isolated part of the island. Here you can enjoy the beautiful Ocean Beach, take a cruise or go on a hike to nearby rainforest waterfalls.
Accommodation
One and two bedroom suites come with TVs, DVD players and a large en suite bathroom with a relaxing spa bath. With plenty of room and an equipped kitchenette and dining setting, Risby Cove is particularly popular among those looking to self-cater. While all accommodation is on the waterfront, be sure to book into a suite with a verandah to take advantage of the setting. Oversized windows make the most of the views and Australian sun, There are also smaller studio units available.
Dining
One of the finest eateries in Strahan, Risby Cove’s restaurant serves local, Tasmanian cuisine. Other than fantastic seafood such as crayfish, salmon and oysters, islanders enjoy fine wines and local beers while Tasmania is also quickly becoming known for its excellent dairies. The real star of the show, however, is its quiet setting alongside the marina’s rippling waters. Take in the sunset as you enjoy a glass of something red or white.
Facilities
Risby Cove’s best asset is its location. Tucked between the waters of Macquarie Harbour and the rainforest, its restored pioneer buildings enjoy a unique position. From the harbour, take a boat cruise out past Cape Sorell Lightouse andthe rocky wilds of Hells Gates to try your hand at fishing or your eye at whale watching. While there’s no swimming at the 33km Ocean Beach, there are excellent sunsets and, if you really want to take to the warm Aussie waters, there’s nearby West Strahan Beach.
