Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge

This charming hotel is the first ever community-owned lodge in Rwanda, perched on the edge of the stunning Volcanoes National Park, the gateway for the once-in-a-lifetime experience of tracking mountain gorillas. Stay in the foothills of the Virunga volcanoes, with the choice of one of six sprawling cottages, two suites and the luxurious family cottage.

The stone buildings are all Rwandese terracotta tile roofs, sprawling lounges, stylish bathrooms, private verandas and fireplaces in a white and cream décor, with flourishes of traditional African art providing a luxurious yet homely feel. The family cottage is particularly special with a sprawling dining area and lounge, then over in the main lodge there are plenty of places to relax with large fireplaces, cosy sitting areas and patio areas for dramatic views to the extraordinary Virunga volcanoes and surrounding farmland. Conservation is key here, and it’s all done alongside an awareness/responsible tourism room to learn about the gorillas and surrounding area before your trek.

Home-cooked, traditional meals are enjoyed in the cosy wood-clad dining room or the outside deck. Obviously, the main draw here is the proximity to the mountains where you trek to see the gorillas, going in groups according to your fitness and hiking among the surrounding jungle between 1.5 and 20km. There's also massage treatments, bird watching, escorted jungle walks and mountain bike excursions, and don't miss the chance to head out trekking with golden monkeys and colossal volcanoes. You're also just moments from the Dian Fossey research camp and have the chance to head on visits to cultural villages, sacred forests and the shimmering twin lakes.
