La Residence is pure luxury alongside plenty of South African charm; a private 30-acre estate located in the verdant countryside of the picturesque Franschhoek Valley, framed by vineyards, orchards and the gentle crests of distant mountains. Inside, the bedrooms' whimsical interiors are offset by ultra-luxurious features, evoking a feeling of unpretentious glamour – gold gilded mirrors, black-and-white Victorian tiling, private balconies and enormous free-standing bathtubs work in charming harmony with sunny accents and bright murals. For families or for an extra-special stay, there are five sprawling suites, offering elevated beds and high vaulted ceilings alongside splashes of colour and opulent furnishings, while in the corridors, sparkling chandeliers hang alongside South African artwork, much of which is created by local artists.
The charm is continued in the dining area, The Great Hall, where thatched and timber-beamed ceilings contrast wonderfully with lavish seating areas, antiques and chandeliers, a grandiose setting for the equally as exquisite food. For a particularly special evening, enjoy a ‘chef’s table’ experience, where, after a walk through the surrounding gardens selecting fresh, seasonal ingredients, a chef will prepare your four-course supper in front of you, alongside steward-selected wines to perfectly complement your dishes. Or, simply sit beside the roaring fire enjoying canapés and expertly mixed cocktails, or in warmer weather, a sundowner in the resplendent loggia. There's also the charming Persian Alley, perfect for an al fresco dinner looking over the gardens and palm fronds. And, of course, one can’t come to South Africa without exploring the extensive winelands – Chamonix and Stony Brook are among the vast variety to discover here.
The surrounding area offers a vast range of activities to complement a stay at the extraordinary hotel, whether that be chocolate tasting in a local boutique chocolaterie or playing 18 holes on one of the most stunning golf courses in the country. Or perhaps you’d like to go fishing in the local Wemmers River, filled with wild brown and rainbow trout, or cycle and hike among the rolling hills. For something more relaxing, head to the hotel's beautiful pool overlooking endless vineyards, or perhaps enjoy a spa treatment overlooking the picturesque dam or in the comfort of your own room.
