Location
The Eastern & Oriental Hotel is a tranquil haven in the heart of Penang. The hotel is steeped in old colonial charm and upholds the finest traditions of comfort, having been patronised by colonial administrators since its foundation in the nineteenth century. Known to many as the ‘E&O’, its historic passageways and halls have long welcomed intrepid travellers seeking to discover the exotic East. Standing proudly at the intersection of Farquhar Street and Penang Road, the hotel is just 20 kilometres from the Penang International Airport and within walking distance of downtown George Town.
Accommodation
Guests can choose to stay in the Heritage Wing or the Victory Annexe. The Heritage Wing is the original site of the hotel, characterised by Moorish minarets and a vast domed lobby that lead to 100 elegant, recently refurbished suites. The Victory Annexe, established in 2013, is an extended wing featuring 118 Studio Suites and 14 Corner Suites with modern updates and an infinity pool with a breathtaking view of the Andaman sea. Rooms range from superior suites overlooking the city to the sea-view E&O Suite, the largest in the hotel, complete with private dining room and luxurious spa bath.
Dining
Choose from several dining options at the Eastern & Oriental, including Planters Lounge, overlooking the Andaman Sea, and Sarkies, a local favourite famed for its Malaysian buffet-spread. For something a little more formal, the Java Tree – named after the iconic java tree on the garden lawn – serves up classic European cuisine paired with fine wines. Don't miss the quintessentially English afternoon tea at Palm Court, followed by vintage cocktails at Farquhar’s Bar with views of Penang’s waterfront.
Facilities
It's no surprise that this grand hotel boasts superb facilities, including a Fitness Centre on the water and the indulgent Pañpuri Organic Spa. For a glimpse into the hotel's impressive history, the E&O Gallery displays a range of unique objects, artefacts and personal anecdotes that have played a role in the life of Penang and the hotel. You can even shop for souvenirs at the Emporium and try on boutique fashion styles at the Victory Annexe arcade. The Heritage Wing's sea-lawn swimming pool is the decided highlight, reserved only for Heritage Wing and Corner Suite guests and surrounded by lush palms and shaded loungers.
