Location
This boutique hotel overlooks both the picturesque Hagley Park and the River Avon, just a 20 minutes’ stroll from the centre of town. Here you’ll find the cultural precinct and Christchurch’s key attractions; expect botanic gardens, art galleries and heritage museums brought to life by a superb tram tour. And, often described as ‘the most English city in New Zealand’, it’s all united in a certain heritage charm. Back at base, you’ll have the opportunity to stroll through the George’s immaculately maintained gardens.
Accommodation
Despite its intimate feel, there’s a range of accommodation styles spread over 53 rooms. Executive Rooms are flawlessly contemporary, featuring king beds, 42” TVs and underfloor heating, while their Premium counterparts add in oak leaf detailing and picture windows. Upgrade to a Junior Suite for either California king beds and oversized windows or king beds and balconies. The Park Suites mix in floor-to-ceiling views of the hotel’s impressive verdure and the 1950s Residence. The latter is a private villa complete with marble countertops and heritage features.
Dining
Across two award-winning restaurants, chefs delight with their skilfully prepared, innovative cuisine. Pescatore, with its panoramic views over Hagley Park, is a minimalist approach to formal dining. Unsurprisingly, fish delicacies feature strongly across both a la carte and degustation menus with delightfully presented meals across the board. Its counterpart, 50 Bistro, combines experimental flair with gourmet classics. Having won a Beef and Lamb Excellence Award, its fine cuts are particularly good.
Facilities
As a luxury boutique hotel, The George has become known for offering a personalised stay; it’s the only Christchurch hotel with a one-to-one staff to guest ratio. As such, the hotel is more concerned with fine dining and superb attention to detail than resort facilities. That being said, you’ll have the use of complimentary high speed WiFi and a fitness centre.
