Location
This award-winning boutique hotel is set in the cultural capital of Kandy, in Sri Lanka’s lush and hilly interior. Built in 1804, it used to be home to one of the country’s ruling families. Its traditional architecture, cloistered verandas and impressive array of antique furniture retain a palpable sense of 19th century grandeur. Kandy is perfectly placed to explore Sri Lanka’s ‘cultural triangle’, within which lies the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, the 5th century rock fortress of Sigiriya, and the fascinating cave temples of Dambulla.
Accommodation
The nine spacious rooms are all housed within the original manor house and feature low-tech luxury like four-poster beds, claw-foot bath tubs, plush local fabrics and elegant antiques. There are five Deluxe Rooms and four larger Ultra Rooms with access to a veranda.
Dining
The food at The Kandy House is traditional Sri Lankan, with fresh produce collected daily from the market in Kandy. Meals are served in the central dining room overlooking the gardens or privately on your terrace. A particular highlight is the feast of ten traditional Sri Lankan curries, served at least twice a week.
Facilities
The hotel offers a range of facilities, including a masseur with 25 years’ experience as an Ayurvedic therapist. You’ll also find a library, an outdoor pool and bikes to rent, while yoga classes and bird- and butterfly-watching take place in the hotel grounds.
