Location
Enjoying a prime position in the city’s entertainment hub, this luxury offering has much of Shanghai’s highlights on its doorstep. Showcase the city’s rich past with the colonial waterfront before hopping over the Huangpu River to take in Pudong’s Blade-Runner skyline. In between, there’s plenty of time for some respite in the traditional pavilions of pond-dotted Yu Garden. Closer to base, you’ll be treated to the glitz of Huai Hai Road. A retail mecca, it’s often referred to as the ‘Champs Elysees of the East’.
Accommodation
As Shanghai itself, the Langham Xintiandi marries timeless style with contemporary elegance. Expect traditional Chinese motifs paired with designer furnishings along with the likes of dark-wood accents, plush carpeting and marble bathrooms. However, it’s the floor-to-ceiling windows that really impress, with each room featuring stunning views over the city. Upgrades add in suite layouts and improved vistas, including overlooks of the historic Shikumen buildings and their terracotta roofs.
Dining
Reflecting Shanghai’s international outlook, there’s a full range of dining options at the Langham. But, it’s the T’Ang Court that truly stands out, having garnered three Michelin Stars – the only restaurant in mainland China to do so. Here, the very best in fresh ingredients go into creating both traditional and modern Cantonese delicacies. For something equally inventive, head to Cachet where expert chefs prepare international dishes at interactive cooking stations. Its accompanying lounge also welcomes with afternoon tea along with a fine selection of whiskies and cognacs. But, come spring and summer, XTD Elevated is the place to be seen, with gourmet barbecue dinners served up on the al fresco terrace.
Facilities
After a day spent exploring the city, the Langham’s spa offers welcome respite. Enjoy a dip in the 25-metre heated swimming pool, book onto a traditional Chinese massage and relax with a soak in the sauna or hot tub. But, if you haven’t quite got your fill of exercise, head to the state-of-the-art fitness centre, complete with everything from weights to cardio equipment. Then, at the end of it all, retire to the lounge. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of bubbly and all the trappings of a Victorian-era club complemented by spectacular skyline views. There’s even a martini bar.
