Departing from Mt. Cook Airport, this full loop – available with both helicopter or ski plane – takes in the best of the South Island’s midwestern scenery from the toweringly alpine down to the oozingly glacial. You’ll start by traversing the white peaks of the Southern Alps to reach the west coast where the landscape gives over to Fox and Franz Josef Glacier – the great authors of the region’s dramatic scenery. Then, track north along the Tasman Sea before re-crossing the Alps to reach the Tasman Glacier – New Zealand’s largest with its thickest point estimated to be 600 metres in depth. Along the way, you’ll make land on one of these three glaciers, stepping out onto its endless sea of white.
