Buddhism first came to Japan by way of the Silk Road in the 6th century. Since then, its Zen school has influenced everything from tea ceremonies and garden design to martial arts and the samurai code of honour. And, one of the most important teachings of Zen Buddhism is that self-enlightenment can be achieved through zazen meditation. At one of Kyoto’s nest temples you’ll be introduced to the school’s ideology by the chief priest who will lead a 10-minute meditation session after explaining everything from how to sit to how to breath and focus. You’ll then be taken on a tour of the temple where you can ask any questions on Zen philosophy before a further period of contemplation. This is also an opportunity to get a privileged insight into traditional temple life.
