Introduction
The vast, semi-arid Kalahari and bushveld habitats of the Northwest Province, near the border with Botswana, were the scene of the world's largest game translocation exercise: Operation Phoenix. The area is the least visited safari destination in South Africa and provides an authentic, off-the-beaten-track experience. Free from malaria it offers visitors exceptional Big Five viewing.
Madikwe Private Game Reserve
To the north of Johannesburg, the malaria-free Madikwe Private Game Reserve is a 75,000-hectare wilderness home to some 300 species of birds along with cheetah, wild dog, a host of reptiles and amphibians, and that all-important Big Five. Accommodation here is exclusive and indulgent, and includes perennial favourites such as the Sanctuary Makanyane Safari Lodge and the stunning Molori Safari Lodge, whose five unique open-air suites are among Southern Africa’s most luxurious.
