Introduction
The Skeleton Coast stretches north from Swakopmund to the mouth of the Kunene River, marking the border with Angola.
The Skeleton Coast is synonymous with the detritus of wrecked ships and the unlucky sailors who perished on these barren shores over the centuries.
The area was once known to Portuguese mariners as ‘the gates of hell' owing to the strong South Atlantic currents colliding against a landscape of sand dunes leading to dry deserts, inhospitable mountains and the gravel plains of Damaraland.
The town of Hentie's Bay supports the local fishing community and is the closest town to the Cape Cross Seal Reserve, the largest breeding grounds of cape fur seals in the Southern Hemisphere.
