Introduction
Taking up the largest portion of the island of Borneo, Kalimantan is still a largely undiscovered destination, with some special flora and fauna and tribal villages obscured by thick rainforest and towering geological peaks.
The key attraction here is the vast and varied countryside and there are two expansive national parks that show off the best of Kalimantan's natural wonders. In Kayan Mentarang National Park to the north you'll find the sunda pangolin, clouded leopard and sun bears. Tanjung Puting National Park along the south coast is home to Borneo's best-known resident, the furry forest man that is the orangutan.
Chugging upriver by traditional klotok (houseboat) to the riverside Rimba Lodge is the perfect way to see the forest and its fabulous creatures.
